Osprey Landing
While crossing the Martin’s Point Bridge, which connects Falmouth and Portland over Presumpscot River, drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists can view of tOsprey Landing. The sculpture alights on an eight foot diameter nest raised on a 20 foot piling. Weighing over a ton, the sculpture conveys light agility as it is dramatically suspended in air, returning to its nest. Klemperer originally created the sculpture for a show at the Maine Audubon Society. the public advisory committee of the Martin’s Point Bridge project decided it would make for a beautiful addition to the new structure. They also commissioned Klemperer to build a home for the bird. While construction for the new bridge wasstill underway, Klemperer used rebar from the former demolished roadway to create a giant nest. In October 2014, Klemperer, along with workers from the bridge, installed the sculpture along the water. The osprey have made such an encouraging comeback after years of decimation from DDT. They are symbolic of some of the thriving wildlife in Maine.
